In November 1983, the Woodstock Centre was opened for residential care for people with a disability in Reservoir Road, Lavington by the Albury Community Health Services. Harold Mair MLA organised the purchase and establishment of the Centre on the site of the Woodstock Presbyterian Girls School.
The Friends of Woodstock Auxiliary was formed with memberships from approximately 41 parents and friends of the first residents of the Woodstock Centre. The first President of Friends of Woodstock, was Peter McCormack. In the early years, money was raised to purchase equipment and extras for the units for the residents, through activities such as races at the Albury Race Club, Doll carnivals and Family Fun Days. Over the years donations have been received from service clubs and the community.
The Woodstock Toy Library Resource Unit was affiliated with the Auxiliary in 1984 with Lucy McGrath-Cusworth as Honorary Directress.
On 23rd May 1987, Friends of Woodstock received funding from the Department of Youth & Community Services to start Family Link Respite Care. Family Link began providing a service to 9 families at the beginning of April 1988. The service now provides respite care for over 100 families.
In 1994 the Orana Early Learning Group was formed at the Woodstock Centre. This service provided early intervention for children with special needs aged 0-6 years and has been funded by the NSW Department of Education & Training since 1995 and Department of Ageing Disability and Homecare since 1998. Over the years Friends of Woodstock have increased their services to Albury Corowa and other rural areas by providing services when they were identified.
Friends of Woodstock has grown into a strong organization by the will and commitment of Life Members, Doreen Widdison and Inge Husz who were the volunteer managers of the Friends of Woodstock for many years until 2003.
These women were supported by a strong band of volunteers who acted in various roles including fundraising, volunteer caring, bus driving and of course as Management Committee members.
Today Friends of Woodstock is set to grow and develop as an organizationthat has an integral part in supporting people with a disability in Albury and Region.
