Home Services Early Intervention

Early Intervention

The aim of Early Childhood Intervention is to provide support for infants and young children who have developmental delays or disabilities, and for their families and communities, in order to promote the child’s development and inclusion into mainstream services
(ECIA, NSW Chapter, 2005).

Early Intervention Groups
Centre-based sessions comprise of 2-6 children who are grouped according to their ages and needs. Sessions at the Woodstock Centre are supported by an early childhood special education teacher and an assistant.

All children attending sessions have a detailed education plan developed by staff to enhance children’s learning. We offer early learning sessions, in home support, toys and resources to children aged from birth to school age who have disabilities and/or developmental delays. Our service aims to help children develop or progress in the areas of play, movement, speech thought processes and social skills. We provide families with a relaxed and supportive environment where they can meet with other families develop networks and share experiences.

Workshops and parent information sessions are held throughout the year at a minimal cost. Topics may include behaviour management, Makaton signing, transition to school.

Early Intervention for Children with Autism
Autism specific groups are designed for children aged between 2-5 years who have been diagnosed with autism. The emphasis in the program is on teaching young children with autism the skills that they require to participate in the pre-school and/or school. There is also a parent component which provides ongoing support and information about their child's disability.

Eligibility and Referrals
Any child from birth to six years with a developmental delay or disability can be referred to the service. Referrals can come from paediatricians, therapists, educators, carers, GP’s, health nurses, other disability services or families. A referral can be made in writing or through a phone call directly to the service. Once a child has been referred to early intervention, staff and family meet for an informal intake meeting to decide the child’s and family’s needs.
